Discovering Calm through Sound and Movement Art

we are precious

The calming effects of Sound and Movement Art are well known, why not add them to your art practice?

Combine the power of music with the freedom of movement and see what happens. You may find that you are able to create more expressive art and you will definitely have a different art experience, if this type of creating is new to you. The painting above, ‘We are Precious’ was created with sound and movement. It is 60”x 60” (152 cm) and I created is out side with music and lots of space to move, let loose and be messy!

Listen to Music

Start by choosing music that resonates with you. Pick songs that evoke strong emotions, whether they are calming, joyful, or even a bit melancholy. Let the music fill your space and your mind. (Be sure to read all the way to the end for my Playlist.)

Let Music Guide Your Hand

As you listen, allow the rhythm and mood of the music to guide your hand. Don't worry about creating something perfect (nothing is perfect!). Focus on the process. Let your hand move freely, responding to the beats and melodies. This can be a very freeing experience, letting your emotions flow into your art.

Incorporate Movement

If you are feeling brave (and your art space has some privacy), take it a step further by incorporating your whole body into the art-making process. Use larger gestures. Stand up, move around, and let your body become part of the creative act. This can help release physical tension and connect your mind and body through art. If you love doing this you may want to create bigger art with more room for your movement and expression.

Feel the Connection

Sound and Movement Art is Creative Wellness routine. It helps you connect with your inner self, combining auditory and physical sensations. Your creative process will be more immersive and this can be very healing.

Why It Works

Music can evoke deep emotions and memories. Right?! So, when you combine it with the physical act of creating art, big things can happen. It can help you express feelings that might be hard to put into words. The movement also adds a physical release, which can be very therapeutic.

Try It This Week

Why not set aside some time this week to try Sound and Movement Art. Choose your favourite music, clear a space where you can move freely, and let your creativity flow. This practice just might become a cherished part of your creative routine, offering both relaxation and deep emotional expression.

Enjoy the process and remember, there are no mistakes—only moments of self-discovery and peace.

Listen to my Flower Child Playlist* to freshen up your creative routine AND try out Sound and Movement Art-making.

Screenshot 2024-06-19 at 11.25.00 AMI made this playlist for my new Flower Child workshop and it is becoming the soundtrack of my summer!

Turn it on, turn it up (if you like it loud!), starting moving and see what you creative!

Use this playlist to celebrate life with songs of peace and love. Envision peaceful people in multi-coloured clothing uniting in music. Imagine the wind blowing away any negativity and stirring light inner thoughts that take on a voice of their own. This music can lift any heaviness you might feel and help you tune out the world beyond your art space.

Create with thoughts of flowers and loving messages, hope-filled to change the world. Pull out paint, paper and fabric in all the bright colours you see… or maybe you see little roses blooming in pastel shades, like the stones in a dreamcatcher…

Please let me know how your exploration of Sound and Movement Art goes!

*NOTE: my playlists are hosted by YouTube Music, so you will need to sign up for a free account to YouTube (if you don't have one already) to listen.  If you enjoy the music you hear, please consider supporting the musicians directly by purchasing their music to keep and enjoy.
