Simple Steps to Create a Mixed Media Self-Portrait - New Video
I am very happy to share with you—my newest video, Simple Steps to Create a Mixed Media Self-Portrait! There’s something truly magical about creating a self-portrait, especially when you let go of the need for perfection and just play with paper, textures, and memories. In this short video, I take you along as I craft a little portrait using a childhood photo, some exciting new materials I’ve been experimenting with, and of course, my favourite mixed media techniques.
If you’ve ever wanted to try mixed media collage but weren’t sure where to start, this video is for you. It’s all about embracing the process, not stressing about the final outcome. For me, collage is a way to capture pieces of my inner world—the smooth, the torn, the layered—each part telling its own story.
I hope you’ll join me in creating your own self-portrait and see how freeing and fun it can be to turn off that inner critic and just create.
Why Self-Portrait Collage?
For me, creating a self-portrait is less about the end result and more about how I feel making it. Its about capturing a bit of my essence and emotion of through colour, texture, and ephemera. The beauty of collage is that you can piece together parts of your inner world using so many different materials, whether it’s made of paper, fabric, or something you found on a nature walk.
Creating layers self portraits also a wonderful reminder that we’re made of many layers—some smooth, some torn—but when they come together, they form something uniquely beautiful.
What to Expect in the Video
I’ll take you through how I choose materials, how I layer them, and some tips about intuitive creating and embracing imperfection along the way. I hope it inspires you to grab a few scraps, turn off the inner critic, and just create.
I think you’ll love how easy and freeing this project is, even if you’ve never tried mixed media collage before. I’d love for you to check out the video and give it a try yourself.

New to Mixed Media Collage?
If you want to create along with me here are a few tips to help you get started:
1. Don’t overthink it
One of the best things about mixed media collage is that there are no mistakes, only happy little accidents (thank you, Bob Ross!). Let your intuition guide you. Start tearing or cutting papers without worrying too much about placement. Trust the process and allow it to unfold.
2. Gather a variety of materials
You don’t need fancy supplies to start—seriously! An old book, scraps of wrapping paper, bits of fabric, and even natural elements like dried flowers and leaves can be great. You can always build up your collection over time, but for now, get creative with what’s around you.
3. Work in layers
One of the joys of mixed media is the layering. Start with a base layer—this could just be your favourite piece of paper. Then build on top, adding textures and colours. Keep layering until it feels right to you. Often, it’s the unexpected combinations that make the piece come to life.
4. Use a glue stick or gel medium
A glue stick is great for paper, but if you're working with heavier materials or fabric, gel medium works wonders. Plus, it dries clear and keeps things in place! Just make sure to smooth everything down as you go so your elements are well-adhered.
5. Play with contrast
Incorporating contrast—whether it's through colours, textures, or shapes—can make your collage more dynamic. Try balancing bold colours with neutrals or mixing rough textures with smooth ones to create interest.
6. Embrace imperfection
It’s easy to get caught up in wanting everything to look ‘perfect,’ but collage, especially self-portrait collage, is about the journey. Imperfections make it unique and more authentically you. Those ripped edges and uneven lines? Embrace them!
7. Finish with a personal touch
Once you’ve built up your layers, think about adding personal elements. This could be a word, a favourite symbol, or a little doodle. It’s those finishing touches that make the piece extra personal.
Most importantly, have fun with it. This process should feel freeing, not rigid. If you’re kind to yourself and open to exploration, you’ll be amazed by what you create!
Thank you for joining me on this creative journey! I hope this video sparks something in you and helps you see how powerful, fun, and healing art can be.
Until next time, happy creating!
With love and creativity,
