A Walk Through Your Story – Moving with Meaning
Welcome to Week 4 of our creative journey! Over the past few weeks, we’ve explored comforting memories, mapped the landscapes of our inner world, and let nature guide us in releasing emotions. If you’re just joining us, no worries—you can start at the beginning of the blog series with Week 1: A Memory in Nature , or jump right in with this week’s prompt.
This week, we’re turning to movement as a way to unlock the stories we carry within us.
There’s something powerful about walking—it’s rhythmic, grounding, and somehow freeing all at once. When we walk with intention, it becomes more than just movement; it transforms into a way to process our thoughts, feel our emotions, and reconnect with our bodies.
Movement Unlocks the Story
I often find that when I’m feeling stuck creatively or emotionally, a walk in nature is the best medicine. There’s a familiar trail that leads from my backyard that winds through a small wooded area. I walk it every day with my dog, and sometimes alone. It’s my way of shedding heavy thoughts, burning off tension, or just being alone with my thoughts. As I walk, the steady rhythm of my steps helps my mind clear.
There have been times I’ve run down this path, trying to outrun my thoughts, and others when I’ve taken a few steps and collapsed to the ground with grief. Yes, this is that path for me. I hope that you have a place for all of your emotions as well. We need spaces like this—a place to heal, to process the weight of life, and to work through the challenges that come our way. It’s a place for peace, for grief, for love, and for solitude.
This week, we’re inviting this type of movement into our art. With each step, we can shed some of heavy emotion.
The Prompt: A Walk Through Your Story
Take a slow, mindful walk outdoors. As you walk, reflect on a chapter of your life that is lingering in your thoughts recently—something that has shaped your story in some meaningful way. It could be a joyful moment, a challenging season, or even something still unfolding.
Reflect
Notice how your body feels as you walk:
Where does tension gather?
Do certain steps feel light or heavy?
What emotions rise to the surface?
Let your thoughts wander, but bring them back to the chapter you’re reflecting on.
Create
When you return home, translate your walk into art:
Use swirls, lines, or rhythmic patterns to mimic the movement of your steps.
Incorporate colors or textures that represent the emotions you experienced.
You could create flowing lines with ink, layer collage materials to show depth, or even stitch rhythmic patterns into fabric.
My Walk Through a Story
When I tried this prompt, I focused on a time when I felt both excited and overwhelmed—a time of growth that required a lot of courage. On my walk, I noticed how my steps felt uneven, almost hesitant at first, but steadier as I went along.
For my art, I used a mix of different blues to cover the journal page to represent my emotions. Then I used a pine branch dipped in gold paint and trailed it along the page to represent my varied paths through the woods.
Here is a visual walkthrough of my little creative adventure. I didn’t have a lot of time for this, but I enjoyed every minute!
I have an advent calendar from a local tea company (Muskoka Tea), and each day I get a cute little teabag hand-filled with fresh teas. I’ve been saving the bags and used one for her dress!
I used a star-shaped hole punch to create birch bark stars.
I pulled an inspiration card to use as a guide—“I will… hope!”
I used the string from the teabag to represent the winding paths I travel in the woods.
(The smell of the pine in my studio was divine!)
The process reinforced for me that our stories don’t always follow a straight path—and that’s part of their beauty.
Grounding Questions to Explore
As you create your piece, consider these questions:
What does the movement of your walk reveal about your story?
How do the colors, lines, or patterns in your art reflect your emotions?
What message does this chapter of your life hold for you now?
Share Your Story
I’d love to see where this prompt takes you—both literally and creatively! Share a photo of your art or a reflection from your walk, tag me on Instagram, in the Creative Delight Studio group, or leave a comment right here on the blog. Let’s walk through our stories together and see what insights unfold.
Looking Ahead
All signs seem to point toward a shift in my plans—and here’s why. Where I live, the towns nearby have declared a state of emergency twice recently due to the incredible amount of snowfall we’ve had in such a short time. Long stretches of highways have been closed, shipments haven’t arrived, and we’ve faced empty shelves in grocery stores and gas stations running dry. Add to that extended power outages without Wi-Fi, and you’ve got a winter adventure of its own.
Thankfully, I’m managing just fine. Working from home and actually enjoying the snow has helped me embrace the quiet coziness of it all. Still, it’s been a big deal for our small communities. And so, my own Soul Foraging has taken on a new flavor—and can be more aptly named snow foraging!
For now, I’ve decided to postpone the second half of the Soul Foragers: A Guide to Creative Healing series until spring, when the weather will be more inviting for those who want to join me for this event.
Here is what you can look forward to exploring with me in the Spring
A Glimpse at Part 2 of The Soul Forager’s Guide to Creative Healing

It is very cozy in this Winter Wonderland cabin in Muskoka while the snow gently floats to the ground amongst the pine trees. A few times a day, I don my Winter apparel and trek through a cut trail to the North. The brook over the embankment and deck is not yet frozen. If you listen, you can hear it cascading towards the Magnetawan. As I walk, I capture the different bark on the trees, so many. I love the snow covered limbs reaching further into the forest. My dog is being pulled to a certain area each time perhaps sniffing out a hare as he comes up with a snow covered chocolate lab face. The driveway is filling in, with any luck a plow will visit before we head South again. I've created a few colour studies in watercolour and did a Tarot card reading while sipping Brule Hot Chocolate. The cards say...use your skill, integrity, perseverance, reinvent and hold on for a continued rough ride til Summer. Blah, not what I wanted, more challenges but skill will carry us through. I've also learned that being close to all my creativity supplies in my own cabin is just as satisfying as sitting in an expensive one. I do love just walking out the door into a forest, but they are just a drive away. I am grateful.
What a gorgeous scene you’ve described—a Winter Wonderland of nature's magic. I can easily imagine the brook flowing toward the Magnetawan River which I can watch flow by in from of my own home! It’s such a special connection to know you’re just 20 minutes away in this breathtaking part of the world.
I feel so blessed to have ended up here. When I accepted a teaching job in 2009, I’d never even heard of this area, but something about it drew me in. Fifteen years later, I’m still here, deeply grateful for the beauty and inspiration this place brings every day.
I love your realization about the joy of being surrounded by your own creative space. It’s such a beautiful reminder that fulfillment often comes from the simple pleasures—a walk, a paintbrush, or a forest nearby. Thank you for sharing this moment of peace and reflection.
Hopefully, we can connect in person sometime! Starting in January, I’ll be hosting in-person workshops each month at the Annex Gallery, and I’d love to share some creative time together.
Wishing you warmth, creativity, and strength as you navigate the season ahead. 💕
