Finding Your Own Creative Rituals

There are so many things that feel chaotic in our world right now, I believe that we need a creative practice now more than ever. Art has this gentle way of guiding us back to ourselves, helping us find a quiet sanctuary to escape the noise and reconnect with ourselves in a deeper way. And it's not about making something beautiful—it's about the time spent creating and the peace and healing that happens along the way.
To create this type of space, a place where you can hear the wisdom that lives within you, takes time. Having creative rituals helps me to create this type of environment, to ease into that relaxed state where creativity flows.
Rituals as a Pathway to Creative Healing
I have a creative self-care routine—a series of small, mindful rituals—to bring structure to my days and to ground myself in the present moment. These rituals aren’t just about adding a little calm to my life; they’re about creating the mental space where my creativity can flourish. In that stillness, I find the clarity to transform thoughts and feelings into art.
These small acts might seem insignificant at first, but they hold immense power. They create the necessary separation between daily life and my artistic practice, allowing me to step into my role as a creator. When I make time for these rituals, I’m not just setting aside a moment in my day; I’m setting aside my very self to serve the creative process.
A favorite creative ritual of mine, which I go deeply into in a recent blog post, “The Magic of Soul Foraging: Blending Nature and Creativity for Healing”. One of my favorite rituals is to take a walk in the woods. There’s something about the earthy smells, the sound of leaves crunching underfoot, the feel of the breeze on my skin that anchors me in the present. I gather little treasures—fallen leaves, stones, a feather—to place on my art table as inspiration. I ground myself in nature, taking deep breaths and noticing the sights, sounds, and smells around me. This simple ritual shifts everything for me; my mind slows down, focuses, and this opens me up to my creative parts.
The Nourishment of Creative Rituals
These actions aren’t just nice habits—they are vital nourishment for our mind and spirit. They shape our days and impact our creative flow, providing both mental and physical sustenance. Rituals like these are a reminder that creativity isn't just about making something; it's about being present with yourself, ready to receive inspiration.
We all have a unique combination of raw materials to work with: our passions, skills, habits, and routines. By making space for creativity, we protect ourselves from the distractions of the outside world and allow our inner voices to guide us. Our rituals become the gentle reminders that we have everything we need to create.
Finding Your Own Creative Rituals
Think about the things that ground you, calm you, and inspire you. What do you do before you pick up your paintbrush or open your art journal? These are your creative rituals. They can be as simple as sitting by the water, taking a walk through a garden, lighting a candle, or journaling. Whatever they are, these moments help anchor you in the present, setting the stage for deeper creativity.
Top 10 14 creative rituals to help you find calm and clarity, even in the midst of life’s stress:
Morning Free-Write: Start your day by setting a timer for 5 minutes and let your thoughts flow onto the page. No editing, no judgment—just a release of whatever is on your mind.
Nature Walk: Take a mindful walk outdoors, paying attention to the sights, sounds, and textures around you. Collect small natural treasures like leaves, stones, or feathers to use as inspiration in your art.
Breathwork and Grounding: Before beginning a creative session, take a few moments to breathe deeply, noticing how the air feels as it moves in and out of your lungs. Let each exhale release stress, grounding you in the present moment.
Tea Meditation: Prepare a warm cup of tea, and sip it slowly, noticing its taste, warmth, and aroma. Let this be a signal to your mind that it's time to relax and open up to creativity.
Candle Lighting: Light a candle before starting your creative work. As you do, set an intention for your session—whether it's to express your emotions, find peace, or simply enjoy the process.
Music or Sound Rituals: Create a playlist of songs or calming sounds that help you tap into a creative or peaceful state of mind. Let the music guide your thoughts as you dive into your artistic process.

Art Altar Setup: Create a small space dedicated to your creative practice. Arrange objects that inspire you—like crystals, photos, or natural elements—to focus your energy on your artistic intentions.
Body Movement: Do some gentle stretching or yoga poses before creating. Moving your body helps release tension and prepares your mind for a more relaxed, focused creative experience.
Creative Affirmations: Speak a simple affirmation before you begin your art practice. Phrases like "I create from a place of peace," or "My creativity is a source of healing" can set a powerful intention for your work.
Art Supply Ritual: Arrange your art supplies with care before starting a project. Handling each brush, paper, or tool with mindfulness can help you ease into a calm, focused state.
Silent Sitting: Spend a few minutes in silent contemplation before starting your artwork. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and allow yourself to simply be present.
Visualization: Imagine yourself in a serene place, like a quiet garden or a peaceful beach. Picture the colors, the sounds, and the textures before you begin your art, letting this vision inspire your work.
Sketch or Doodle Warm-Up: Spend 5-10 minutes making small sketches or doodles, without any specific goal in mind. This loosens up your hand and your creative energy, making it easier to dive into your main project.
Scent Ritual: Use essential oils or incense in your creative space. Scents like lavender or eucalyptus can help calm the mind and set a peaceful mood for your artistic practice.
These rituals are all about creating space for yourself—to breathe, to center, and to let creativity flow. Try a few and see which ones resonate with you the most, transforming your art-making into a healing practice.Rituals in Times of Pressure
Rituals in Times of Pressure
In stressful times, creative rituals can be like an anchor, grounding us when the storm feels overwhelming. These small, mindful practices help us slow down, breathe, and shift our focus from chaos to calm. When we engage in a familiar ritual—like lighting a candle before starting our art practice or taking a moment to journal our thoughts—we create a sense of stability and control. These actions signal to our minds that it's time to pause, reflect, and reconnect with our inner selves. By turning to these creative rituals, we remind ourselves that even in the midst of uncertainty, we have the power to create moments of peace and clarity. Art becomes not just a form of expression but a soothing balm for the soul, helping us to process our emotions and find a path back to calm.
